The 4 Phases of a Successful Online Business

PREPARATION

PHASE 1 - PREPARATION:

RESEARCH AND PLANNING

Find your passion, set your goals, explore your aptitudes and attitudes to identify your strengths and abilities. Clearly define product(s) and service(s) you are an expert in that are not already available in the market - your niche. 


Do your competitor research to learn what is available and their pricing model for the content they are including. Clearly define your ideal client and the problem you help them solve. Identify their pain points IN THEIR WORDS. Develop your mission statement and manifesto.

 
Make your presence known in the market with social media value posts, engaging with others and presenting yourself and your solution on podcasts, FB Lives and other venues.

DEVELOPMENT

PHASE 2 - DEVELOPMENT:

BUILDING AND CREATING

Outline your program and/or membership content. Create slide decks, worksheets, checklists, etc. Plan out what’s needed for creating your content and recording videos to streamline the process and keep you and your team organized.


Define your perfect client journey to deliver the results of your solution to your clients. Define how the process will be handled and identify opportunities for automation and systems/apps to help you over-deliver and create raving fans.


Write copy for your sales pages, funnels and ads. (Hint: Use some of your value posts as a jumping off point for copywriting.) Create designs for logos, website, landing pages, lead magnets, funnels, slide decks and social media ads. 

IMPLEMENTATION

PHASE 3 - IMPLEMENTATION:

INSTALLING AND MARKETING

Get your domain, website and domain-based email set up. Activate and configure your apps and get them integrated. The normally most important apps are: payment gateway, sales and landing page builder, email and text automation, scheduling automation, membership portal and video hosting.


Build out your sales pages and funnels. Create automation sequences to deliver your perfect client journey. Record, edit and upload your videos. Create your membership portal and upload your content. Set up your automated booking calendar. Do your marketing - organic and/or paid ads.


Clearly define your Client Success Process and set it up in your supporting apps to automate the process and guarantee that all clients have the same high-quality experience, and nothing falls through the cracks.

OPERATIONS

PHASE 4 - OPERATIONS:

DELIVERING AND IMPROVING

Provide your expertise to your clients through your program/service and interacting with them in your FB groups. Create and update your Client Success Process frequently, as you ask for feedback from current clients on how you can improve your current offering.


Listen to your clients in personal interactions and social media to identify new opportunities to provide them more programs or services to address new pain points. 


They will ask for what they need to build on what you have already delivered. GIVE THEM WHAT THEY ASK FOR! This is a Win-Win, as they get what they need to be successful and you get another program to offer to them and future clients = more revenue for you!

Now, let's look at the tasks involved . . . 

As you can see, the Phases are chronological, in that you cannot do anything else before your Preparation and Planning. Likewise, you cannot Install or Market until your Development and Creating is well underway.


The related tasks below are also in chronological order and, in some cases, they span across more than one of the 4 Phases. For instance, Establishing Yourself as a Thought Leader is an ongoing process, so it spans all 4 Phases.


Installing, Configuring and Integrating Your Tech starts in the Implementation Phase and also continues into the Operations Phase.


DEFINE YOUR NICHE, YOUR IDEAL CLIENT AND YOUR OFFER

Do your research! Review competitors’ websites, videos, blogs and offers to see what is currently available in your Niche. Think about what you can add to the market that is not currently there. Dial in your “I help ____ do _____ so they can _____” statement.

OPTIMIZE YOUR

SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILES

Update your personal profiles in all social media accounts to reflect your business, who you help and the benefits of working with you. Do NOT use your business name, but keep on brand with colors and copy. Update profile photos, cover photos, Bio and About sections. Be consistent across all of your accounts.


START ESTABLISHING YOURSELF AS A THROUGHT LEADER

Create a free Facebook Group dedicated to your niche. Join other Facebook groups where your ideal client would be. Create useful and valuable content, then post regularly on social media. (Note: Value Content can be recycled again after 6 months or so.) Engage with others’ posts and help others whenever you can. Show them you can help them by HELPING THEM!

DIAL IN YOUR PROGRAM 

AND/OR SERVICE 

Start with what you learned during the research into your Niche and Ideal Client. Plan out what you will deliver and how you will deliver it. Be sure to highlight what makes YOUR solution superior to others. Break it down into bite-sized pieces.

DEFINE YOUR

PERFECT CLIENT JOURNEY 

Think about the new person who has never heard of you and how you will inform them, educate them, nurture them and entice them to work with you. Then think about what you want their perfect client experience to be and how you will exceed their expectations.

START CREATING COPY FOR YOUR SALES PAGE, EMAIL, FUNNELS

Post valuable content on your social media. Join Facebook groups where your ideal client would be. Create useful and valuable content, then post regularly on social media. Engage with others’ posts and help others whenever you can. Show them you can help them by HELPING THEM!

IDENTIFY AUTOMATION,

SYSTEMS AND APPS

Choose the technology that fits your Perfect Client Journey and will deliver the client experience that turns your clients into raving fans. Be sure to “Be your guest!” in other words, put yourself through the process you are building with the tech and be sure it is delivering.

REGISTER YOUR DOMAIN, SET UP YOUR HOSTING AND YOUR WEBSITE 

Your domain name should be as close to your company/brand name as possible. .COM is best, but .CO, .US, .NET, etc. can also be used. Your website can be just one page at first. You need to have an active domain and website to do many things in marketing and social media. Get an email with your domain name instead of Gmail or Yahoo email, etc.

INSTALL, CONFIGURE AND INTEGRATE YOUR TECH

Start with your automation and sales page apps. Some apps are “All-In-One” and others are for specific functions. Use the copy you have already written to build out your sales pages and funnels and to create your email automations. If you are doing Consults or other meetings, set up a booking automation app connected to your calendar. And, of course, you will need a payment gateway app (Stripe or PayPal, for example).

CREATE YOUR PROGRAM/SERVICE CONTENT

Create slide decks, worksheets, checklists and other materials. Outline your program and create a production schedule for planning and recording your videos and uploading to your portal. Create your downloadables. Write and record webinars, if using. Create a paid Facebook Group for your members only and create more/different content than your free FB Group.

DO YOUR MARKETTING

Depending on your budget you will use some, or all, of these - Organic Marketing, which consists of Conversational Marketing and Attraction Marketing and/or Paid Advertising. Organic Marketing can be the same across all of your social media. Paid Advertising is specific to the platform(s). Facebook ads can be shown on Facebook and Instagram in the same campaign. LinkedIn and YouTube ads are shown only on their platform. You can use the same ad copy and creatives across all platforms.

BUILD OUT YOUR CLIENT SUCCESS PROCESS

This is where your perfect client journey really shines AND gets you rave reviews and loyal fans! Design your onboarding process to welcome new clients and make them feel at home and cared for. Provide feedback opportunities, such as surveys, for you to learn what is and isn’t working as well as it should. Make appropriate changes and ask for feedback periodically to continually improve your program or service and keep the client happy and satisfied. (This leads to great testimonials!)

LISTEN TO YOUR CLIENTS AND GIVE THEM WHAT THEY ASK FOR 

Happy clients are a great source of knowledge when creating your next product or service. Really listen to what they say are problems or pain points, then develop a solution. You will be able to add upsells from your existing clients, which is much less costly and time-consuming than finding new clients. This is a Win-Win, so don’t miss this opportunity!

RINSE AND REPEAT!

Adding new products or services does not involve all of these steps, as your domain, website, apps, etc. are already in place. Repeat the steps for developing the client-facing content, sales and marketing and delivering the new products. Be sure to add it to your Client Success Process and feedback loop so you continue to exceed client expectations and continue to be front-of-mind for their future needs!
