I don’t know how many times I have heard the same thing . . .

“(fill in coach’s name here)’s $10K (or more!) program was such a waste of money.”

I’m guilty here as well. I have participated in several expensive “programs” with little or no results.

Of course, I get angry with myself for being so “gullible” . . .

But was I really?

In all cases, the coach in question really DOES have quite a large following and many other people also enrolled in their programs.

So why does it not deliver?

My theory is that most coaches only know how to teach what worked FOR THEM.

I find it quite ironic that every single coach tells us the very first thing to do is to identify your perfect client, or “avatar” (I hate that phrase) who will benefit from our unique gifts and then identify how we solve a real-life problem they are experiencing.

The irony is that while we talk about what is uniquely US and separates us from all the others, the approach they want us to take is the one that worked FOR THEM and THEIR AVATAR!

That MIGHT work, but it might not . . .

You are unique. Audiences are different. Your perfect client is not the same as mine. So why should we all do the same thing?

It would be WAY more work, but wouldn’t it be better to help coaches discover what would work best for THEIR perfect client?

It seems so simple - like common sense.

But then I am reminded of the saying “Why is common sense so uncommon?”

Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed?

Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed?

Does it seem like you spend more time working on your technology than the things that you actually do for your clients?

There are so many apps to get set up and connected and so many things to do!

Creating your landing pages and funnels to grow your list, . . .

. . . building your portal, . . .

. . . setting up your website, . . .

. . . making sure you have email nurtures to move your list from leads to clients, . . .

. . . creating content, . . .

. . . recording and editing videos, . . .

The list goes on and on!

And of course, paying for all of the tech while you are learning and building!

. . . without having any income yet.

There is a theory, that since you have more time than money when starting out, the answer is to learn all of the technical parts of getting your business up and running by yourself.

(Even though you are not technical and many of those tasks will not be done often once they are done the first time.)

There is another theory, that the sooner you get everything set up and working, the sooner you will be able to serve your clients and make some money.

(Investing in yourself and your business is the best way to serve your clients sooner.)

Which theory resonates with you?

Does it seem like your Tech Stack keeps getting ever more complex (and expensive)?

Like there's just too many pieces of the puzzle?

And they seem to always be in motion . . .

. . . and Tech is not your Genius Lane - just a necessary evil in running a successful coaching or consulting business ?

I hear you!

Tech happens to BE my Genius Lane . . .

And I have made it my mission to help coaches and consultants get the most out of their tech, with the least amount of time, money and stress.

Using Facebook in your business can seem a bit overwhelming at first!

There are quite a few moving parts and things you need to do (and NOT do!) to be successful.

Having a large following for your Facebook Business Page boosts the chances that your posts will be seen by more people, giving your business more exposure. Having more Followers also makes your Page more established and engaging, and presents your business with more authority.

Of course, having interesting, useful and eye-catching posts on your Page are a must! The Facebook Algorithm decides who sees what posts based on many factors. Our goal as business owners is to do everything we can to catch the attention of our ideal clients.

The first step for a new Facebook Business Page is to increase its visibility. Using the built-in “Promote Your Page” function is an easy way to start getting Page Likes and Followers. As these increase, your Business Page will start to improve in the Algorithm, and your Page’s posts will be more widely seen.

Adding a Facebook Group to your Page is another excellent way to increase your Page’s reach. In fact, the algorithm is such that only 1% to 5% of your Business Page followers will even see your posts.

Having an active Facebook Group related to your Business Page gives you 2 benefits: 1) posting and doing Facebook Lives in your group raises your standing in the algorithm, and 2) Facebook is focusing on Groups in 2021 and 2022 as the best way to create engagement and they are committed to supporting Communities on Facebook, so they will do the heavy lifting for you in being sure more of your group members see your posts.

And don’t forget about your personal profile! When someone sees one of your posts and wants to find out more about you, they will click on your profile.

To optimize your profile, you need a profile photo that looks like you and is natural - not too professional.

You also need a descriptive cover photo that is tied to your business branding, WITHOUT your business name. While we are using our profile to present our best selves to our audience, don’t make your personal profile another business page.

Include a link to join your Facebook Group as a “button” on your cover photo. This is done by adding the button to the cover photo using Canva (or another graphics editor).

Then when they click on your cover photo the post that was created when you added the cover photo opens. Add the text thanking them for asking to join the FB Group with the link to your group.

As an aside, be sure to change the URL for your group to as close to the group name as you can. For example, my group, The Illumi Nation’s URL is facebook.com/groups/theilluminationgroup.

Lastly, as with everything that is important in your business, consistency is key.

Showing up for your own posts, pages and groups, as well as interacting with other groups regularly is how you start, and keep, a following.

People will come to know you, like you and trust you.

So, what did we learn from the Facebook (and others) outage?

I’ll tell you what I learned . . .

This is another example of why it is IMPERATIVE to NOT have all your eggs in one basket!

I was already pissed at FB for their shenanigans where they disable people’s business and ad accounts (including mine) for absolutely no reason.

I was pissed that there is no human interaction for their “Customer Service” department.

I was pissed that they obviously DON’T CARE about small businesses, or us small business owners.

Now, the big thing I took away from today was that here is the perfect (non-FB Ad) reason for my clients to STOP letting FB basically run their business.

And if FB is not happy, they’ll just shut you down . . .

Today was all the reason any of us should need to make sure we have ALL of our Peeps and Prospects in a non-FB place, such as our CRM . . .

So when stuff hits the fan the next time, and it WILL, we are not majorly impacted.

Just imagine if you were using your Friends List, Business Pages and FB Groups as your main place to keep and engage with your Clan.

What then?

Don’t let ANYONE or ANYTHING other than YOU be responsible for your greatest business assets - your Peeps.

Get them into your CRM - NOW.

If you don’t have a CRM yet, now is the time. If you have any questions, let me know.

Let’s all take our power back from big Tech and be Masters of Our Own Destiny!

(OK, rant over . . . )

Have you tried social media marketing and not had the results you hoped for?

You are not alone! That is a common problem at first.

There are so many moving parts involved in social media marketing and it can be a bit overwhelming in the beginning!

Something to remember is that even when you are not running ads, you are actually “marketing” on social media every day when you post, engage, reply to others’ questions and appear Live on your page(s) and group(s).

Your online “Persona” IS a subtle, low-key marketing tool that is ALWAYS ON. That is why it is so important to be aware of how, where and when you interact with your social media accounts. And, of course, always put your BEST face (and voice) forward!

Become the calm voice in a confusing world for your audience. Or be the exciting personality getting them worked up to take action on their problems.

In addition to helping expand your social media reach you are also HELPING. It is easier for people to trust you to help them in the future if you have ALREADY HELPED THEM!

Then when you do start active marketing with ads and landing pages your audience already feels that they “know” you, and may be starting to “like” you. And, if you have helped them, they also trust you.

Until you hit your stride with running ads, it is easier, and more affordable, to focus on just ONE social media platform to advertise on. After success there, you can expand to other platforms.

Do you sometimes wonder if you are running your business or if IT is running YOU?

Online business owners know that their success depends on systems, but they often face the double-edged sword of Technology . . .

All of the apps for marketing, sales, contact nurturing, client success and more are great, in that they automate so much of the daily workflow, BUT there are so many apps and they don’t necessarily play nice together.

As a business owner you may not be a whiz at tech, but your business success depends on tech, so what do you do?

The first step is to get a clear understanding of your business activities and processes - what needs to be done and in what order.

The more detail you have in this analysis step, the better your systems will deliver.

Next, evaluate and decide what apps will best support you and your business goals, paying attention to the apps’ ability to connect to other apps, so things work smoothly.

Once you have the right apps installed, they need to be connected and tested. And, of course, everyone needs to be trained so you can have the benefit of the apps working as expected.

Last, but not least, you need a plan for when things DON’T work right. How will you troubleshoot and resolve any problems?

Plan ahead and have a resource available to assist in troubleshooting and problem resolution.

To help you start to map out your business activities, here is a Client Journey 4 Foundations Mindmap and Details Outline that summarize the areas of your business with the What, the Why, the How and the Technology.

Have fun with it! You will learn more about your business than you might think, AND you will be taking that first step to moving your business forward with systems and technology!

Once you have your audience informed and interested in your product or service, how do you get them to take action?

If they are reading your website, your blog, Facebook page, Instagram Page or LinkedIn page, or watching your Lives, that is GREAT!

Good for you in getting their attention and delivering your message!

NOW what?

The next step is for them to TAKE ACTION. In the Marketing world, that is a “Call to Action” (CTA). In the Online world, that appears as a button or a link to be clicked. Once clicked they are brought to a Landing Page.

Notice, I didn't say “they are brought to your website.” While your website is professional, informative and visually appealing, there are way too many choices! You have no control over what they will click on and what they will see to distract them from the action you want them to take.

Enter the Landing Page. As the name implies, it is a SINGLE PAGE that they LAND on. On that page is the information about the Call to Action; for example, a lead magnet “freebie” you offer in a post or an ad to give away in return for their email address or a product/service you are selling or a consult you are offering in a post or an ad.

When they click on the CTA and land on the landing page there is only ONE THING there. All they see is the information about the subject of the post or ad, explaining more about it by giving them the details, benefits, and testimonials.

Near the top of the landing page (“above the fold”) is the CTA button to complete the action. The CTA button is repeated throughout the landing page if it is a long sales page.

But that is all there is! Only the details you want them to consume about your offer, and nothing else to distract from the purpose at hand. No navigation menu, no other links, nothing else!

When they click on the CTA button they are brought to either the lead form to enter their email, the order page to complete their purchase, or the booking page to schedule a consult, depending on the type of landing page.

Once the action is completed they are brought to a Thank You page, thanking them for taking action and giving any final information on what they should expect to happen next.

On the Thank You page you can have links to your website or your Facebook group to have them find out more information or take one more step toward you.

By limiting the options available on your landing page you have control over their actions and steer them DIRECTLY to the action you want them to take! 😀

That sinking feeling when you know exactly what you WANT to do, but you don’t know HOW to do it . . .

On the highway of life your Genius Lane is likely NOT Technology, so how do you get your message, your product or your service to your audience when EVERYTHING seems to be an ever-increasing amount of Technology?

Everyone has experienced Tech Overwhelm at some point. My Genius Lane IS Technology and I still struggled in the beginning.

What systems do I need to take my business online?

How do I market online?

How do I deliver my programs online?

How do I schedule calls online?

How do I process payments?

How do I create professional graphics?

How do I automate the email nurturing process?

How do I build landing pages?

How do I connect them with the autoresponder?

How do I record (and edit) videos?

How do I create FB Ads?

What the heck IS a Pixel?

And, how do I use the pixel in landing pages and sales pages to track the results of my ads?

Once all of the pieces of the Tech Puzzle are identified, then how to set them up and integrate them?

Many “gurus” offer their landing pages or autoresponder sequences to their members to customize and lightly say “just tweak them.”

“TWEAK” them!!!?? Really? That's all there is to it???

If you have never used Clickfunnels or Keap, for example, HOW can you TWEAK them? You can’t.

So, you decide to attend online training to learn the new systems. Good decision!

BUT, the people running the training are starting at a knowledge level WAY above someone who has never done it before. AND they go at such a fast pace, you end up being even more confused . . .

I experienced this myself and vowed that once I figured it all out, I would teach it to a level and at a pace that normal human beings can follow and actually LEARN.

In keeping that promise, I am offering a 6 Week Keap Pro Onramp training program starting in August. If you would like to know more about it, let me know in the comments.

Our Online Presence is like a “living” thing and must be active to “stay alive.”

That means consistent, on-point, attention-grabbing blogs and social media posts - monthly, weekly and even DAILY!

In addition to the number of blogs and posts each month, you also have to be sure the material is current, interesting and valuable to your ideal client audience.

That is a LOT of pressure!

And, once again, that is all ON TOP of the everyday tasks of running your business . . .

Let’s try and streamline the process a bit. Knowing exactly WHO your ideal client is starts your Online Presence journey.

Once you know who they are, it is necessary to get to know them on a deep level. Talk to them, ASK them what THEY are struggling with. What are THEIR pain points? How is that affecting them? How would they feel if those pain points were removed?

As I have recently posted on the topic, equally important to learning what their struggles and pain points are, is putting them into words - the words THEY use, NOT the way you would describe them in YOUR words.

Remember, YOU do not have their struggles and pain points, you have the solution. So your way of talking about it comes from a different place. You need to talk about it in THEIR words, with THEIR emotions and frustrations.

Your blogs and posts should address some part of their struggle and suggest solutions to solve their problems.

It shouldn’t always be about overt SELLING. It should be a subtle, consistent presentation of your understanding of what they are going through and your ability to find and share solutions.

As you help them with free information in blogs and informative posts, they start to not only recognize your knowledge and authority on the subjects, they begin to trust you to have the answers.

Then, when you do have a product or service to sell that addresses their struggles, you have already demonstrated your ability and willingness to help them.

Sounds good, right? Right.

Now, exactly HOW are you supposed to do all of that with the frequency and consistency to demonstrate your knowledge and leadership in such a way that they think of YOU when they are ready to invest in solutions?

As with most things, PLANNING is 80% of the battle and execution is 20%. I like to create a matrix on a spreadsheet to map out the topics, the posts themselves, and then where and when each was posted.

You can recycle your posts and blogs through your different social media accounts, profiles, pages and groups. Keep track of what you use where and when, so you don't repeat anything from the last 3 or 6 months.

Are you a little freaked out when someone says “Do a Facebook Live?” 😱

I was!

Don’t people go to journalism or film school to learn how to be “on” in a live format?

And, by the way, don’t they have someone writing their script and a teleprompter?

Seriously! And you want ME to turn on the camera and just start talking?!?!

What will I say? Will anybody watch? What if I mess up?

Been there, done that!

The good news is many, if not most, of your views will be after the actual Live itself. (Yes, you say, but they ARE still watching . . . )

Yes, they are. And that is the whole point!

Talking like a normal human being to your audience, in a very REAL format. They see YOU, unvarnished (well, except for hair and makeup!) 😊

The point is, they get to KNOW you. The more Lives you do, the more opportunities there are for people to get to know you, like you, and trust you.

OK, what if I DO decide to try it, what will I talk about?

Let me ask you this: What do you write about, teach, consult about or help others with? THAT is what you talk about!

Even though you are alone, looking into the camera instead of a real person’s face, talk like you ARE in front of a person who is your ideal client.

Think about THEM and what they need and how you can help them.

Discuss their problems and pain points. Give helpful information. Ask them to engage by entering questions they may have.

(Remember many will not be watching live, so you need to follow the Live post for a few days so you can respond to questions from people who did not watch it live.)

It can be a bit tricky to watch the comments while you are talking and not get distracted. Because it IS Live, people know you have to look away to read the comments, so don't feel like you have to “read sideways” . . . 🤓

Just be REAL, be YOU.

You have something to offer and they are watching because they WANT to. 😃

How the heck many apps do I need to run my online business?

I’ve pretty much just closed my eyes, held my nose and jumped!

And landed in the Tech Spaghetti Pool . . .

Every one of the FUNCTIONS being done by each app is an important part of delivering a world-class experience to my clients, so really not optional.

This has bothered me for months!

The situation IS crazy, but is all of this actually necessary?

The short answer is YES, all of those FUNCTIONS ARE necessary . . .

And NO, all of those apps are not necessary!

As the saying goes, there’s more than one way to skin a cat (yuck - terrible analogy . . . )

We tend to lose sight of the fact that the reason we are here is to serve our clients when we talk about apps and systems. It feels like the apps are the focus, doesn’t it?

Whoa! Isn’t the CLIENT the focus?

Isn’t the QUALITY of their experience based on our secret sauce, NOT the complicated apps and systems used to provide the experience?

I came to that realization recently.

I am trimming my long list of apps WITHOUT compromising quality.

Don’t get me wrong - there are still multiple apps involved and they still need to be connected.

BUT saving hundreds of dollars per year and eliminating several complicated apps and integrations is making me smile!

How are you managing your Facebook Ads in this brave new world?

As if Facebook Ads weren’t confusing enough already - your Facebook Business Account, your Ads Account, your Pixel, your Events Manager, your Audiences, your Ad Campaigns, your Ad Sets, and (finally!) the Ads themselves!

Now layer on top of that all of the things you need to do in your Business Account, your Ads account, your Pixel, and Events Manager because of the iOS14 Update Changes . . . .

and then just forget what you knew about the Ads Manager Dashboard results reporting for your Ad Campaigns . . .

. . . because a large portion of your results won’t even be showing on your dashboard!

Things like the actual number of people who saw your ad, the number of people who clicked on your ad, the number of people who took your lead magnet, or registered for your webinar or booked your consult or bought your product, are not all being reported.

So your results in the Ads Manager do not look as good as your actual results.

Things like the CPC (Cost Per Click), or CPR (Cost Per Result) will be WRONG because Facebook doesn’t know what actions Apple device users may have taken on your ad because they opted out of being tracked.

iOS devise users will still SEE your ad, they will still CLICK on your ad, they will still DOWNLOAD your lead magnet and REGISTER for your webinar or BOOK a consult.

But Facebook will not know they did anything.

You can see the problem. Facebook will know how much you spent and they will know the results from Desktop and Android users, but not the Apple users.

So everything will look like it costs WAY more per click or per result because it is being divided by the smaller, incomplete number without the iOS users.

We now need to take a different approach in reviewing our Ad Results, because all of the actual results are no longer being reported to Facebook, only the desktop users and Android device users will appear in the dashboard results reporting.

Your actual Ads Results will now be in 2 places! The amount you spent on your ad is still in your Ads Manager, but the actual number who downloaded your lead magnet is in your landing page builder (Clickfunnels, Kajabi, Keap), etc.

To know the accurate and correct Cost Per Result you need to divide the amount spent (as shown in the Ads Manager) by the number of Leads captured from your landing page builder, or the number of Webinar Registrations from your webinar management system, or the number of Consults from your auto-scheduler.

Not the end of the world, but it makes an already confusing process even more so.

Solving Problems

On the Highway of Life, my Genius Lane is Solving Problems. Any problems, but especially business problems.

The difficult I do right away, the impossible takes a little longer . . .

People ask me how I got into doing what I do, so I thought I would share the "short" version . . . 😊

When I was 17, my father told me to drop the college prep courses and take a typing course, so I “could get a job.”

I told him I was going to college and he said no, we couldn’t afford it. I told him yes I was, and I would find a way.

That was the first time I realized my ability to FIND A WAY was limitless.

I was the first person on either side of my family to go to college! (Thankfully with Grants, Scholarships, Work-Study, and Loans.)

My college major was Computer Science, until the end of my sophomore year.

My advisor told me “there are no jobs in Computer Science” (Seriously! 😲 )

I was scared because I had college loans to be repaid, so I asked where the jobs were and he said Accounting.

Being really good with math and engineering, I figured, how hard can Accounting be? Numbers are numbers . . .

I switched majors and completed the Accounting Major in 2 years.

And I was the ONE Accounting major from my college to get a job with Price Waterhouse! (One of the “Big 8” Accounting Firms at the time.)

My first love was still Computer Science, but I was determined to become a CPA, since I had come this far (and I don’t do anything halfway! 😉 )

There were five sections on the CPA exam (each one 4-5 hours) and the “wise” people said to focus on the 2 sections you thought you could pass, as you needed to pass at least 2 sections for it to count.

I decided I didn’t want to have to do it again, so I studied day and night with the goal of passing the whole thing on the first try.

(This was unheard of at the time, when calculators were not allowed and all of the work was done by hand.)

And I DID IT!!!! 🥳

Two years later, in the early 80s, I was working as a Management Consultant at Peat Marwick. The first Apple computer and IBM PC were just being introduced.

I went to the Managing Partner and told him I thought PCs were going to be BIG and Peat Marwick should start a PC Consulting Division. (And I wanted to be part of it.)

He told me PCs were just a flash in the pan and mainframes were here to stay.

I thought about it for a few months, and then told him if he wasn’t going to do it, I WOULD.

I quit my job and started the first PC Consulting firm in my state!

(He told me my job would be waiting for me when it didn't work out.)

I never looked back! And here I am.

Facebook Advertising

As if Facebook ads and pixels weren't enough to worry about as a business owner, now Apple is changing the way activity is tracked by requiring app users to opt into being tracked!

What are the chances that people are NOT going to turn off tracking?

So now, what does that mean for your Facebook advertising?

80-90% of users are mobile device-centric, meaning they do most of their online activity on a mobile device, such as a mobile phone, iPad, or another tablet. . .

And millions of users are on Apple devices.

This situation is fluid, as the changes have not been fully implemented yet, but it is important as a business owner that you know and understand that something IS happening, so you can determine what it means to YOUR business.

Here is a very good blog post by Brett McHale at WordStream to help you start to learn about the changes.

Tech Problems

Those “tech problems” may not be ONLY tech problems . . .

Many times there are workflow problems, skills or training problems, even staffing problems.

But, it sure LOOKS like a tech problem, because that is where you see the disconnect.

How do you find out what the problem REALLY is, even if it IS tech?

And then, just as important, how do you fix it?

It is always best to have an expert review your problem with you to ask the right questions . . .

. . . to be sure what you see IS the actual problem, and not just a symptom.

I have been solving business and technology problems for over 30 years.

In that time, I have never had to tell a client “it can’t be done.”

My motto is . . .

The difficult we solve right away, the impossible takes a little longer . . .

If you would like another set of eyes from an expert to review your problem with you and let you know what the solution is, click the link in the comments for a FREE Tech Review Call.

The best way to get something done is to begin. Let’s get going!

Client Success

Adding to my recent posts on the 4 Foundations of Online Business, today let’s look in more detail at the fourth of the Foundations - Client Success.

(Notice I said Client SUCCESS, not Customer Service. We need to be sure our clients have success, not just our service . . . )

While it is true that the first thing you need to actually be in business is customers, once you have them your job is to keep your clients delighted so they become your raving fans. It is MUCH easier to sell more to happy clients than it is to find new clients.

The Client Success Foundation has 3 components - Onboarding, Client Feedback, and Nurturing (the “What”).

Within each component we address the Why, the How, and the Technology. From there we assess what we are doing in our business for Client Success (or what we plan to do) for each component, and then how to best accomplish it.

Mapping this all out so you can see it makes it easier to figure out exactly what we need to do and how to do it.

It is helpful to analyze the way we are doing each step to find any gaps or weaknesses. Then we know what needs to be done to improve our Client Success so we can meet our goals and keep our clients successful.

From there it is easier to select the right tech systems that meet our unique goals, instead of a one-size-fits-all solution.

Here is a graphic outlining these steps to help you get started.

Admin & Tech

Adding to my recent posts on the 4 Foundations of Online Business, I want to go into more detail on the third of the 4 Foundations of Business Success - Admin & Tech.

While it is true that the first thing you need to actually be in business is customers, once you have clients you need Admin and Tech to run your business and keep your clients delighted.

The Admin & Tech Foundation has 3 components - Website/Domains, Task/Project Management, and Office Systems (the “What”).

Within each component we address the Why, the How and the Technology. From there we assess what we are doing in our business for admin and tech (or what we plan to do) for each component, and then how to best accomplish it.

Mapping this all out so it is organized makes it easier to figure out exactly what we need to do and how to do it.

It is helpful to analyze the way we are doing each step to find any gaps or weaknesses. Then we know what needs to be done to improve our admin and tech so we can meet our goals.

From there it is easier to select the right tech systems that meet our unique goals, instead of a one-size-fits-all solution.

Here is a graphic outlining these steps to help you get started.

Sales & Marketting

Adding to my recent posts on the 4 Foundations of Online Business, I want to go into more detail on the second of the 4 Foundations of Business Success.

While it is true that the first thing you need to actually be in business is customers, in order to get those customers you need to take your product or service to the market.

The Sales and Marketing Foundation has 3 components - Sales/CRM Systems, Sales Funnels/Landing Pages, and Online Presence (the “What”).

Within each component we address the Why, the How and the Technology. From there we assess what we are doing in our business for sales and marketing (or what we plan to do) for each component, and then how to best accomplish it.

Writing this all out so it is documented makes it easier to figure out exactly what we want to do and how to do it.

It is helpful to analyze the way we are doing each step to find any gaps or weaknesses. Then we know what needs to be done to improve our sales and marketing so we can meet our goals.

From there it is easier to select the right tech that meets our unique goals, instead of a one-size-fits-all approach.

Here is a graphic outlining these steps to help you get started.

Product / Service

Following on from my recent posts on the 4 Foundations of Online Business, I want to go into a bit more detail.

While it is true that the first thing you need to actually be in business is customers, you wont be getting any customers without a great product or service.

For online businesses our product or service has 3 components - Product Creation, Product Delivery and Membership (the “What”).

Within each component we address the Why, the How and the Technology. From there we assess what our unique business does (or plans to do) in each component and how to best accomplish it.

Writing this all out so it is not just swimming around in our brain makes it easier to figure out exactly what we want to do and how to do it.

It is helpful to do a self-assessment of the way we are doing each step to find any gaps or weaknesses. Then we have actual information to improve the processes.

From there it is easier to select the right tech for OUR business, instead of following the crowd and choosing the tech that everyone else is using.

Here is a graphic outlining these steps to help you get started.

Your clients need is NOT what they need.

When what you THOUGHT your clients need is NOT what they need . . .

As an alternative to my high-ticket six month coaching program, I have an intensive 12 week training that takes business owners through every facet of setting up and running a successful online business.

I was SO excited to launch it!

 . . . crickets . . .

Instead of takers who wanted to sign up for the training, I had multiple requests for individual, hands-on help with their systems!

Some need help setting up their systems for the first time.

Some need help solving a problem with systems that are already set up but not working correctly.

Still others need help figuring out WHICH systems they need and how to best implement them, at the lowest cost.

Well, I am nothing if not a Problem Solver . . . So, major pivot!

I changed my offer to blocks of 3 hours of one-on-one time for Done For You/Done With You work sessions.

After the hands-on problem solving and training they then have the recordings of all the sessions for future review and learning.

And now they are happy campers!

How about you?

Having trouble knowing where to start and which systems are best for your business?

Having trouble setting up your domain, subdomain or SSL?

Having trouble setting up and/or testing your payment methods?

Having trouble creating your Lead Magnet and/or landing page?

Having trouble customizing a Shared Funnel or creating your Membership Site in Clickfunnels?

Having trouble setting up email campaigns in your autoresponder?

Having trouble connecting your landing page or funnel to your autoresponder?

Having trouble exporting or importing your existing list?

Having trouble with Facebook Ads Campaigns, Ad Sets, Ads or Audiences?

Having trouble with Facebook Lives, video production or video editing?

Need help testing all of your systems' flow to be sure all parts are connected correctly and working smoothly together?

If you said "Yes" to any one of these questions (or multiple questions), reach out and let’s see how I can help you.

The best way to get something done is to begin . . . Let's get going!

How do you do THAT?

Fill in the blank for which THAT you are thinking about - automation, accounting, ads . . .

(And those are just the “A”s . . . )

Business owners expect to be able to choose and set up the tech to get all their business processes DONE.

(Many times they don’t even know for sure what all of the processes are . . . )

and then they expect to personally DO it all . . .

They spend untold hours trying to learn technology that has nothing to do with what they set out to do when they started their business . . .

Then they wonder why everything takes so long . . .

They won’t pay for tech help to get it done right away because they “don’t have the money,” but they pay hundreds of dollars per month on their apps for 12 months (or more) trying to get it to work by themselves.

The next thing you know . . .

. . . Overwhelm . . . Self-Doubt . . . Frustration . . .

It’s a new year and the perfect time for a new outlook.

As a business owner, your job is to GET things done, NOT to do everything yourself.

A good manager surrounds themselves with people who know more than they do and have skills they don’t have.

You cannot be doing the high-impact tasks that bring more clients and more revenue if you are cooped up for months fighting with something you are not good at.

Make 2021 the year you throw off the chains that are holding you back and take positive steps to get the tech done early, so you can USE the tech you are paying for.

One year ago, what did you expect for 2020?

I’m pretty sure it had nothing to do with what actually happened in 2020 . . .

But here we are and we made it to the end!

No matter WHAT you planned for this year, those plans were altered, most times, dramatically . . .

Look how resilient you are, how you adapted to a previously improbable global crisis!

And look at all of the changes that have happened to everyone, everywhere . . .

While the lockdowns and other restrictions have kept people apart for safety, we now have a new community experience we enjoy daily with Zoom meetings, Facebook Lives, virtual events, and other new ways to stay connected.

I’m guessing your planning for 2021 is quite different than previous years. While the basics are the same, the strategies and tactics are not.

We still need to take our overall goals for the year and break them down into quarterly and monthly milestones. We also need to temper those goals with an almost “split test” approach, depending on how hard hit your area is.

For the first time, I am setting new year goals with Plan A and Plan B. As it happens, that is what we all ended up doing this year, so I am going into 2021 with that possibility built into my plans.

Of course, there is no guarantee that an unknown surprise won’t happen and we will have a Plan C situation, but my planning is more fluid and flexible now, so I will be ready for whatever comes down the pike in 2021!

TOO MANY moving parts in your online business?

Do you sometimes feel like there are just TOO MANY moving parts in your online business?

The beauty of an online business is that you can manage it all yourself from your home office.

That can also be a curse, because you may feel like you HAVE TO manage it all by yourself . . .

All of those business processes and systems to get figured out, set up, and connected!

Wait a minute! When did it become mandatory that EVERYONE become a Tech Nerd just to get their business running?

Not to alarm anyone, but have you seen a diagram of the activities and processes most online business owners are juggling? I have included a diagram below with many of the moving parts.

While not every online business will need every process, most online businesses will need most of them.

Where do you even begin?

Since I have been a Tech Nerd all of my life, this is my jam!

I start with outlining the business from a helicopter view level to get all of the major functions documented.

Then take each function and break it down into the What, Why, How, When, Who and Technology needed.

Then, just like a puzzle, go through each one to determine the best way to accomplish the function, who will be responsible, what tech is needed, what the cost will be, what time is needed to get it set up, and how does this piece of the puzzle fit into the overall structure.

With each additional business function, repeat the process. As you complete the diagram add the connection to any other process or system that it depends on, or any process or system that depends on this one.

Finally, install, configure and integrate the tech systems so you can test your solution.

The job is not finished until the entire process and system structure have been documented, tested, any troubleshooting is done and everyone is trained.

So, the bottom line is that it feels like a big project because it IS a big project!

But if you approach it with logic and reason, you will learn the processes and systems you need to meet your goals today, and set you up for growth in the future.

Are you running your online business or IT is running YOU?

Do you sometimes wonder if you are running your online business or if IT is running YOU?

Online business owners know that their success depends on systems, but they often face the double-edged sword of Technology . . .

All of the systems for marketing, sales, contact nurturing, client success and more are great, in that they automate so much of the daily workflow, BUT there are so many systems and they don’t necessarily play nice together.

As a business owner you may not be a whiz at tech, but your business success depends on tech, so what do you do?

The first step is to get a clear understanding of your business activities and functions - what needs to be done and in what order.

The more detail you have in this analysis step, the better your systems will deliver.

Next you evaluate and decide what systems will best support you and your business goals, paying attention to the systems’ ability to connect to other systems, so things work smoothly.

Once you have the right systems installed, they need to be connected and tested. And, of course, everyone needs to be trained so you can have the benefit of the systems working as expected.

Last, but not least, you need a plan for when things DON’T work right. How will you troubleshoot and resolve any problems?

Plan ahead and have a resource available to assist in troubleshooting and problem resolution.

To help you start to map out your business activities, here is a Systems Success Roadmap that summarizes the types of systems you may need for each area of your business.

How will YOU attack your new year goals? 🏹

As 2020 draws to a close, EVERYONE is breathing a sigh of relief! (Through their mask . . . ) 😷

No matter WHAT your goals for 2020 were a year ago, NOBODY saw a global pandemic coming . . .

And no one could have anticipated the economic impact of shutdowns, layoffs, stay at home orders and other restrictions . . .

If ever there was a year when not meeting your goals was NOT your fault, 2020 is the year!

BUT now that we are almost a year into the “new normal,” there is no excuse for not setting and hitting your goals for 2021.

We have learned so many things and made so many changes, it’s hard to imagine the way things were only 12 months ago . . .

Before working from home . . .

. . . Before daily Zoom meetings . . .

. . . Before wearing the same sweatpants for a week (different tops for the camera!)

. . . and never being completely sure what day it was, because they were all the same . . .

Here we are, at (hopefully) the beginning of the end of the pandemic.🙏

It will still be months before the actual end, but seeing it on the horizon is encouraging and very exciting! ⛵

How will YOU attack the new year?

Will you slump through the next 6 months just getting by?

OR will you take all of that pent up energy, ambition and drive, point it toward 2021 and SLAY it?!? ⚔️

I vote for the latter, and I bet you do, too! 😀

To help you kick off your new year with more skills and confidence, I am announcing FREE trainings in several of the areas online business owners struggle with.

Pick the one that is holding you back and Get it DONE in ‘21! 🛠️

The best way to get something done is to begin. Let’s get going! 😃

Fast and Easy Facebook Ads

Having a large following for your Facebook Business Page boosts the chances that your posts will be seen by more people, giving your business more exposure. Having more Followers also makes your Page more established and engaging, and presents your business with more authority.

Of course, having interesting, useful, and eye-catching posts on your Page is a must!

Facebook Ads are also an important part of your marketing strategy. There are several steps in creating a successful ad - the ad copy, the image or video, and the landing page that the ad links to, collectively known as the “Creatives.”

While the Creatives are extremely important, even “perfect” Creatives will not be successful unless they are presented to the right audience. Likewise, choosing the wrong Objective and Methods during the Ad Creation Process will also limit the success of your Ad.

I held a live Fast and Easy Facebook Ads workshop earlier this year. If you would like access (for free!) to this recorded training and the written step-by-step guide, the link is in comments below.

Online Business Secrets

As online business owners we are bombarded all day, everyday, with demands on our time and other resources in a seeming tug-of-war.

The four foundations of our business (1-Product/Service, 2-Sales & Marketing, 3-Admin & Technology and 4-Client Success) all require constant care and feeding to keep moving forward.

Juggling all of these functions WHILE moving forward is a challenge. The only way to stay on top of everything is to identify all of the pieces that go into each function and then define your process to best perform that function.

Once a process is defined it can be delegated and/or automated. Until then YOU are the one doing all of the juggling.

It sometimes seems like it “takes too long” to define and document functions and processes, but as long as everything is all in your head, no one can help and you cannot automate.

As we wind down this year and look to the new year, it is a perfect time to make it a priority to invest some hours into getting your business functions and processes defined and documented.

That is the first step to having 2021 be a great year! Getting everything out of your mind and onto paper (or a software screen) helps you clarify and streamline your business processes.

Then, and only then, can you automate functions and free up your time and energy to focus on GROWING your business, not just staying afloat.

I have included a high-level birds eye view diagram of an online business to get you started.

Have fun and help yourself have a very good new year!

To say 2020 has been a crazy year is an understatement!

So many things happened (and DIDN’T happen!) this year . . .

If you’re like me, you have a list of 2020 goals that are still not quite met, and the clock is ticking!

It’s hard to believe we are already in the middle of the 4th Quarter . . .

One nagging 2020 problem many people are voicing is getting their tech stack connected, tested and WORKING!

It’s nice to have Stripe to accept payments, but how do you set up payment plans and test them to be sure they are working?

It wonderful to have Keap Pro, Infusionsoft, ActiveCampaign or other email autoresponders. But how do you connect them to the rest of your tech and how do you create email nurture sequences that direct contacts to your landing pages?

It’s all well and good to have Clickfunnels for your landing pages and funnels, but is it fully configured? And is it connected to Stripe and your email automation?

It’s great to have a beautiful Learndash Membership Portal, but how do you get clients enrolled, give them access to the content they purchased, get their user accounts set up and send them their logins?

Automated Scheduling is a beautiful thing, but how do you integrate it with Clickfunnels, your website, your portal and Zoom?

Facebook Lives are a great way to engage your community and market your programs and services, but how do you do Lives with screen sharing and be able to come back to face-to-camera? And how do you stream to your Facebook Page, your Facebook Group and your YouTube Channel at the same time?

Recording and editing videos has never been easier, but how do you embed videos on your website and your portal? And how do you add a Call-to-Action button on the end screen to keep your viewers engaged?

Even those who have their tech set up don’t have a way to troubleshoot when things go wrong . . .

These are just a few of the problems online business owners are facing in 2020.

Most expected to have it all done and “tucked in” before now, but definitely by the end of the year . . .

But here we are, with only weeks left in the year, and the tech is STILL not working!

If you are in that same boat, and would like to cross this off your list sooner rather than later, click the link in the comments below to schedule a FREE Tech Review Call for a plan to get your tech DONE.

Do a Facebook Live?

Are you a little freaked out when someone says “Do a Facebook Live?”

I was!

Don’t people go to journalism or film school to learn how to be “on” in a live format? (And, by the way, don’t they have someone writing the script and a teleprompter?)

They see YOU, unvarnished (well, except for hair and makeup!)

Because it IS Live, people know you have to look away to read the comments, so don't feel like you have to “read sideways” . . .

Just be REAL, be YOU. You have something to offer and they are watching because they WANT to! 😀

Coaches and Consultants - Is Perfectionism Holding You Back?

Do you keep putting off completing things because they are not “perfect?” I know I did.

Good news! DONE is the new perfect! 😀

One thing to remember is that your audience does not know what you know or what you expect, so they will not notice something that you might think is “not quite the way you want it to be.”

In fact, they will soak up all of the goodness with excitement that they are FINALLY getting their problem solved!

And isn’t that why you started your business to begin with? To help as many people as you can who are struggling with the problems you can help them with?

Isn’t it more important to help THEM get the transformation that your solution provides, so they can progress in THEIR journey?

I guess what I am saying is, “We need to get over ourselves!” 😀

We need to stop waiting for perfection and get on with HELPING our clients. Won’t that feel better than having a “perfect” course, video, blog, or script?

Perfectionism is a type of procrastination. As long as we are working on the 2nd, 3rd or 5th version of something, we are not getting it DONE.

And then we wonder WHY we can’t seem to get things finished!

Remember, your consult, coaching and course materials are the gold your clients are looking for. They do not care that the PDF may not be perfect, or the video may not be perfect.

They are consuming what you are providing so they can move from their pain points to a place of success. THEY are happy and thrilled to be progressing!

Here’s the bottom line: it is not about YOU, it is about you helping THEM.

The sooner the better, so stop procrastinating . . . They need you, NOW! 😀

Is perfectionism holding you back?

Do you keep putting off completing things because they are not “perfect?”

Good news! DONE is the NEW Perfect!

One thing to remember is that your audience does not know what you know or what you expect, so they will not notice something that you might think is “not quite the way you want it to be.”

Won’t that feel better than having a “perfect” course, video, blog, or script?

Perfectionism is a type of procrastination. As long as we are working on the 2nd, 3rd or 8th version of something, we are not getting it DONE.

And then we wonder WHY we can’t seem to get things finished!

Remember, your consult and course materials are the gold your clients are looking for. They do not care that the PDF may not be perfect, or the video may not be perfect.

They are consuming what you have created and are moving from their pain points to a place of success. THEY are happy and thrilled to be progressing.

Most times, our perfectionism is not from thinking we don’t know our stuff, it's from knowing we don’t know all the tech involved in delivering our stuff, and the delivery is what is not perfect.

In my Masterclass starting on Monday, “Monetize Your Online Presence in 5 Days,” I will be showing you how to do 6 of the techy things that may be holding you back. And you will be DOING those things as tasks in the Masterclass.

I will be providing support in a Q&A Session each day if you have questions while completing each day’s tasks.

My goal is for you to have the confidence and skills to move forward in things holding you back, even if it is perfectly imperfect!

If you would like to attend, drop a “YES” in the comments and I will gift you my 5 Day Masterclass.

The best way to get something done is to begin. Let’s get going!

How do you get them to take action?

By limiting the options available on your landing page you have control over their actions and steer them DIRECTLY to the action you want them to take.

Tech Overwhelm!

“TWEAK” them!!!

If you have never used Clickfunnels or Infusionsoft, for example, HOW can you tweak them? You can’t.

So, you decide to attend online training to learn the new systems. Good decision!

BUT, the people running the training are starting at a knowledge level WAY above someone who has never done it before. AND they go at such a fast pace you end up being even more confused . . .

I experienced this myself and vowed that once I figured it all out I would teach it to a level and at a pace that normal human beings can follow and actually LEARN.

I am starting my Masterclass tomorrow, on Monday, July 13, 2020, “Monetize Your Online Presence in 5 Days.”

During the week we will be building a landing page, creating a Facebook Audience, creating a Facebook Ad to get you 10,000 followers, making a Facebook “Live” video (NOT Live, just recorded), and setting up Facebook Business Page and Facebook Groups, including customizing the URLs.

If you would like to attend, drop a “Yes” in the comments and I will gift you the 5 Day Masterclass.

I hope to see you there!

The best way to get something done is to begin . . . Let’s get going!

Have you tried social media marketing and not had the results you hoped for?

You are not alone! That is a common problem at first.

There are so many moving parts involved in social media marketing and it can be a bit overwhelming in the beginning!

Something to remember is that even when you are not running ads, you are actually “marketing” on social media every day when you post, engage, reply to others’ questions and appear Live on your page(s).

Your online “Persona” IS a subtle, low-key marketing tool that is ALWAYS ON. That is why it is so important to be aware of how, where, and when you interact with your social media accounts.

Then when you do start active marketing with ads and landing pages your audience already feels that they “know” you, and maybe starting to “like” you. And, if you have helped them, they also trust you.

Until you hit your stride with running ads, it is easier, and more affordable, to focus on just ONE social media platform to advertise on. After success there, you can expand to other platforms.

Your Online “Persona”

How do you present yourself online?

Are you one way on your website and another way on Facebook or Instagram and still another on LinkedIn?

One of the secrets to expanding your Online Presence is to have a consistent, cohesive, and professional “persona” for you and your business across all of the online world.

That means having a professional website, social media banners, and covers that carry your branding and message consistently everywhere. This helps people get to know and understand who you are and what your services are.

The best way to develop your online presence into a business-generating engine is to make it a priority to follow and listen to your ideal clients in their “natural habitat.”

This means hearing them when they describe pain points and things they are struggling with. Pay particular attention to how they say it and how it is impacting them.

It means speaking in THEIR terms about you and how you can help them. Your solutions should be presented in terms of how the solutions help your clients get past their pain points, NOT in terms of your background, education, or experience.

The short story is, it’s all about THEM, and not about YOU!

Your online persona should be professional and helpful. It should encourage your prospective clients to learn about your solutions because they speak directly to them, in terms they use and relate to.
